My name is Brent, and I’m one half of this blog. If you would have asked me in 2011 if I would ever have a website, my answer would have been a resounding no. Other than a few geocities and angelfire pages when I was a teenager, I have only ventured into the world of blogging for mandatory assignments in college where I was forced to embrace technology. Don’t get me wrong, I love working with technology, but never thought I’d have a blog. One of the many things I’ve changed perspectives on over the years. So, how did this all come to be?
In April of 2010, I met Heather, and Heather was pursuing a Master’s degree in Publication Management, and was creating websites for her coursework as well. We’ve been together ever since, and after moving in together about a year later and enjoying the comforts of not being on the lookout for a mate, we (I) got comfortable and lax with being healthy. I always had thought I was healthy enough, trying to eat low-fat and exercise regularly or go to the gym. By the time I finished with my Master’s degree in 2011, I was about 50 pounds heavier than when I started, and it wasn’t because of all the muscle I gained in the gym. In an attempt to find a smarter way to lose weight rather than the yo-yo I had experienced in the past, I found the paleo diet. A little bit of reading online later, I found out that this really made more sense than the other things I had attempted in the past, and wanted to give it a go. There were a few false starts for a week or two, and before I knew it another 6 months had passed.
In traditional “new year” style, in 2012 I decided enough was enough. In February, I told Heather that we were doing this thing for real, and jumped on our first Whole 30. We also signed up for a crazy obstacle race for the following August, my attempt to have a long-term goal that would encourage me to get back into shape (I wouldn’t have been able to limp into work following the race explaining I hurt myself because I wasn’t in good enough shape to do the race). My accountability measure was to create this website. The more I cooked and took photos, first with my iPhone and then upgraded to a Nikon D5100 with a 50mm lens, the more I realized this was a really enjoyable hobby and a lot of fun. Also, posting out to the world has allowed us to meet like-minded people, as well as share our delicious finds.
Long story short, I lost those 50 pounds. The weight fluctuates, but I only know that from the mirror–the scale is tucked away for now. More importantly, we feel better, sleep better, and feel better about our health. Being skinny is nice, but feeling healthy is awesome. We hope you’ll join us as we continue our journey.
We’re always interested in trying and reviewing new, healthy food options and products in that vein, as well as making new friends!
